136. Sold. Rare Neoclassical Parian Figure by Bing and Grondahl 1853-1894


 

A Very Fine Neoclassical Parian Group by Bing & Grondahl depicting a mature Bearded Gentleman standing close to a younger man both viewing something of interest in the distance, after Bertel Thorvaldsen 1770-1844.

 

Height: 11.5" (29.5cm). Width: (base) 7.5" (19cm). Depth: (base) 4.25" (11cm).

HISTORY: Grondahl, a young sculptor originally worked for The Royal Copenhagan Factory. He became discruntled there because RC refused to go along with his suggestion that they make porcelain copies of the sculptures of Denmarks greatest sculptor at the time Bertel Thorvaldsen, who had died in 1844. Grondahl left Royal Copenhagen and together with the Bing Brothers (successful businessmen) started Bing & Grondhal in 1853. This rare piece with realistic articulation was one of their earliest pieces.
