Whitefriars (1720-1980) is arguably one of the best known English glassmakers, records show it first started producing glass just off Fleet St. in London in 1720. James Powell, a London Wine Merchant and entrepreneur, purchased the factory in 1834. 

In the mid 1960s the designer Geoffrey Baxter who had joined the factory in 1954 directly from the Royal School of Art began experimenting with a new approach to glass design this resulted in introducing the "Textured Range" which was released in 1967. This range introduced some revolution shapes using moulds fashioned from unusual yet common materials and in a myriad of vivid and subtle colours which are still highly prized today and are collected by avid admirers around the globe.  Pieces such as the Drunken Bricklayer, Banjo, Bark & Totem Vases look fantastic in any setting, are regularly used as background staging on several daytime TV shows, and also are firm favourites with Interior Designers. Baxter died in 1995.
